In this course, attendees will learn about the benefits of the macular carotenoids lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin, and the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. Via diet or supplementation, their effects have been characterized for visual & cognitive health and performance across the lifespan. A brief history of the study of macular carotenoids will be presented, followed by a summary of the many benefits that patients may experience with supplementation. Scientific background will be given, specific studies summarized. Effects ranging from visual performance enhancement to improved dry eye status to reduction of risk for development of age-related macular degeneration will be covered, and emphasis will be placed on how the effects can improve the lives of patients – and how to confidently discuss the effects with patients.

Whether it be cataract surgery or a refractive lens exchange (RLE), after the crystalline lens comes out, a light refracting implant is inserted back into the eye. This lecture aims to provide an in-depth update on refractive cataract surgery including, pre-operative preparations and measurements, intraoperative tools including newer intraocular lenses (IOLs), and post-operative management.

In a progressive condition like keratoconus, the foundation or bases in patient management revolve around early diagnosis and preserving vision. Paramount in preserving vision in keratoconus patients is taking an interventional approach to stop corneal warpage. This lecture aims to discuss keratoconus signs, diagnosis, stabilization treatments with corneal crosslinking, and visual rehabilitation in the keratoconic patient.
