Metabolic disorders such as diabetes give rise to a multitude of systemic abnormalities including hypertension, central obesity, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia, and are strongly associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease. It is well known that each of these systemic conditions has ocular health / visual consequences; the role of oxidative stress and inflammation in the pathogenesis of diabetic eye disease has been well characterized.
